What are Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are prosthetics placed over teeth to restore shape, size, and function. To create a crown, we take an impression of the affected dental arch and prepare the tooth so it can be placed on top of a crown. A temporary crown is first placed, allowing for comfortable chewing before the permanent crown is made.

When is a Dental Crown Needed?

There may be several cases where a dental crown may be necessary:

1. Root canal treatment: If a tooth is severely decayed and cannot be treated with a simple filling, it must be resuscitated. A crown will then be placed over it.
2. Aesthetics: Dental crowns can improve the appearance of teeth, especially discolored or chipped teeth.
3. Cracked tooth: A dangerous tooth that can break permanently if not protected by a crown.
4. After dental implants: Implants replace the roots of natural teeth. A dental crown is placed over the implant to complete the complete restoration of the missing tooth.

Dental Crown Materials

Which crown material should you choose? Metal-ceramic, smooth ceramic, semi-precious ceramic, or zirconium? The choice obviously depends on your budget and needs.

1. Zirconia crowns offer numerous advantages over metal-ceramic, smooth ceramic, and semi-precious ceramic crowns, making them the best solution for replacing missing teeth.

2. Metal - ceramic dental crowns: Made with an internal metal structure covered with ceramic. They are highly aesthetic and durable.

3. Single ceramic crowns: These are made of porcelain or ceramic and are suitable for patients with metal allergies.

4. Zirconia crowns: the strongest and 100% biocompatible. Zirconia is also particularly suitable for posterior crowns where higher pressures are created during chewing.

How to Care for Dental Crowns

Dental crown care should become a habit: artificial crowns protect teeth or replace missing ones.
Always brush them after meals.
Use dental floss or an interdental brush every day .
Rinse periodically with mouthwash .
Avoid chewing foods that are too hard.
Have your teeth and crowns checked by your dentist at least every 6 months.
