Endodontics

What is Endodontics

Endodontics deals with the treatment of the pulp (tissue inside the tooth, including nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue) and the surrounding tissue. This treatment is also known as root canal therapy. The dentist removes the pulp, fills the cavity with an appropriate filling, and seals the root with a thermoplastic rubber called gutta-percha.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the nerve tissue or pulp becomes inflamed or infected. If root canal treatment is not started, the tooth's condition will deteriorate, causing pain and abscess formation in the inflamed area. The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient does not feel anything.

How a root canal treatment is performed

First and foremost, our endodontist specializes in endodontic treatment (i.e., the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of pulpal diseases and lesions). He or she will take x-rays of the dental arch to determine the type and extent of the inflammation and determine the most appropriate treatment.

After anesthesia, latex pads are placed on the teeth to prevent any contamination, including saliva, and to keep the treatment area dry. The endodontist will then remove the pulp tissue and clean the root canal.

Each root canal is filled with gutta-percha and filling cement. Gutta-percha is biocompatible and therefore does not damage the oral cavity. The dentist seals the tooth with a temporary filling. In the second appointment, the tooth is sealed with a permanent filling or an artificial dental crown.

Endodontics: when is it necessary?

There are various symptoms that let you know when you need endodontics:

1. formation of an abscess at the root of the tooth
2. prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold substances
3. severe pain , continuous or during chewing 4. broken tooth

When a tooth's pulp becomes infected, bacteria multiply in the pulp chamber and create an infection or abscess, a pus-filled sac that forms at the root of the tooth along with the dying pulp. As the infection progresses, pain and swelling can spread to other parts of the face.

Once the infection is removed by root canal treatment, the restored tooth can chew normally. However, it is important to pay attention to oral hygiene after root canal treatment.
